The man best known to us as the crawling disturbed yet somehow lovable Gollum will be sharing directorial duties with Peter Jackson on the upcoming prequel to the Lord of the Ring trilogy- The Hobbit.
For infrequent readers of movie news blogs the Hobbit has been planned to be split into two films.
Serkis has been asked to be a second unit-director which are currently in production in New Zealand. Sekis told the Hollywood Reporter:
I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told The Hollywood Reporter. “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.
Serkis is already familiar with directing with the video game Heavenly Sword. But this will be his first time contributing towards the Jackson/Tolkien mythology.
After this venture in to life action directing Serkis, is reported to have said that he is interested in to directing more live action films.
Serkis has done most of the motion caption needed for filming so expect a lot of hands on directing duties being done by Serkis rather than Jackson. Who would likely be consumed with 101 other duties.
Serkis is also expected to star in the upcoming film Rise of the Planet of the Apes as Caesar, prequel to Planet of the Apes.
