Michael Shannon to play Zod in Superman: Man of Steel

Not many of us get to play Zod (Sorry for the pun).  Some of us however do.  Michael Shannon is the latest casting announcement to come out of the Zack Snyder Directed, Chris Nolan produced take of the man of steel.

Shannon has starred in Revolutionary Road, Jonah Hex and Vanilla Sky.  He’s frequently been a character actor rather than a lead but, as they say, every Zod has his day (sorry again).

Zod for the unknowing out there was last seen on screen* in Superman II by Terence Stamp.  Stamp delivered the infamous line KNEEL BEFORE ZOD and my favourite WHO IS THIS SUPERMAN!?

In an ordinary world, Shannon would have his work cut out for him.  But like the Crow this is a franschise that is being rebooted rather than being sequelised**.

This means that we won’t see a Christopher Reeve impersonator, Marlon Brando stock footage monologue or the famous orchestral opening we’re all familiar with.

This version is attempting to reinvent Superman for a new audience; and possibly for the better.

*I’m not counting Smallville.  I like to forget it existed
**Sequelised- A word exclusive to MovieCake
