The Crow Remake has a Director

And it is Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.   The man who directed 28 Weeks Later has now signed on to direct the reimagining of the cult film The Crow.

This is not another remake.  As for many know there have been far too many attempts to reimagine the original James O Barr graphic novel from which the film is based.

This version however, is apparently going to be a remake of the first, and orginal film as well as sticking more closely to the sombre if not magnificent graphic novel.

The Crow is about Eric Draven who with his wife gets murdered.  He is resurrected by the mythological crow to seek revenge of the people who killed them in order to reunite with his wife in Heaven.

Now the good thing about this is that The Crow is a fantastic format.

The bad thing is that no one ever gets it right.

The original film starring Branden Lee (Bruce Lee’s son), was an instant classic.  The franchise (which it inevitably turned out to be) should have never carried on without him.

For the original also carried with it the abhorrent misfortune of being Branden Lee’s last film.  He was killed on set by shrapnel fired of a prop gun.

Does The Crow need rebooting? I would say so.  If the sequels were never made then maybe I’d say differently.  But I’ve been given such a sour taste I need something to wash the bitterness away.

The problem for Fresnadillo is to create a film what feels fresh.  He is a good director.  However, this particular film needs some serious work towards it if it’s ever going to be successful.

At worse this upcoming film could be average.  Having leant from the past they decided to reboot.
At best they could really create a fresh platform.  Create either a standalone piece or it could, for a change, admit that they want to capitalise on the name and write it so there’s a sequel.

Personal opinion: I’ll believe they’ve salvaged the ship when it floats. Till then I’ve the life boats at hand.
